John Scofield · Medeski, Martin and Wood

Louis the Shoplifter – Billy Martin (Medeski, Martin & Wood)

Taking a quick break from the straight-ahead stuff I’ve put up recently I’m going back briefly to funk for a bit. This one is from the 2015 album ‘Juice’ by Medeski, Scofield, Martin & Wood and penned by Billy Martin, the drummer. Like a lot of the tunes on this album its fairly simple (this one is largely blues-based) with not a lot of changes. The focus is more on the groove, in this case an almost latin feel. Watch out for the awkward length of the solos (25 bars!), with the last two bars as a kind of solo break.

  1. Billy Martin solo tasteful, restrained and controlled.
Tune a brilliant harder-than-you-think number that keps you guessing – if you play it as I do in a band of mature jazz / blues players who love the knotty problems that MSM&W throw at you.

Great musicianship and great sense of fun
