Cannonball Adderley · John Lewis · Modern Jazz Quartet

Venice – John Lewis

This is probably one of my favorite tunes that no one seems to play! The only versions of it that I’m aware of are on the soundtrack for the film ‘No Sun in Venice’ by the Modern Jazz Quartet and a great Cannonball Adderley record, ‘Know What I Mean’, which also happens to feature Bill Evans. Percy Heath and Connie Kay from the MJQ also feature on both records, which is perhaps why Adderley chose to record this tune as well. Besides from that I haven’t heard anyone else play it, which is a real shame.

‘Venice’ is a fairly standard 32 bar slow swing feel tune -not a ballad. I’ve changed the harmony around slightly (largely the final two bars of each section) and the lead sheet is probably more of an amalgamation of both the Adderley record and the original recording.
