John Coltrane

Bakai – Cal Massey

‘Bakai’ is the first tune off John Coltrane’s first album as leader, recorded in 1957 for Prestige – this tune wasn’t actually written by Trane but by trumpeter Calvin ‘Cal’ Massey, however the trumpet on the record is by Johnnie Splawn. Rhythmically this tune is an interesting Afro-Cuban style piece which alternates between largely straight 8s in the 12 bar A sections and a swing feel for the 8 bar B section, while the solos swing throughout.

There’s some great soloing by Trane and Red Garland on this track, recorded only a couple of months before the much better known ‘Blue Train’
